I tried it again but still get an error message that says "too many re-directs." I cleared cache and cookies (as the error page suggested) but it still doesn't work. Alas, I don't think I'm going to get this one anyway! |

Colombia? Is Panama the isthmus that became independent? Perhaps as part of the canal project, since both occurred near the turn of the century? |

I dunno. I'm just sopying it off a jeopardy archive site. I do remember this episode though. It's from last october. 4) Europeans once referred to China as this, still seen in the name of an airline what is... |

Panama is the isthmus that became "independent" after the U.S. ripped it off from Colombia, which was then newly independent from Spain (along with Venezuela, a chunk of which I think also had been part of the New Granada colony.) Arguably it didn't get real independence until the Panama Canal Treaty in 1977, and then the U.S. intervened militarily, uninvited, in 1991 to remove their chief executive, Manuel Noriega. Saigon is now known as Ho Chi Minh City. It was located in Annam, which later became part of Vietnam. "Sinaica" is the old European name for China that comes to mind, but I don't recall an airline with that name. |

I believe they referred to the Far East generally as the Orient, and there used to be an airline called Northwest Orient. However, I think they've been out of business for a couple decades. So, if this is the right answer, mayhaps this question is drawn from a very old episode? |
