Lactic acid is sort of a halfway metabolic product of a muscle that's operating anaerobically. Muscles elsewhere in the body that aren't working as hard (or the same one if you let up) can take up the lactic acid and squeeze the rest of the energy out of it.

Seriously, the gluteus maximus muscles are the ones that constrict your rectum, which is to say they're the big muscles in your butt.
