hmmm. Groucho's bit was the cigar, not a drink. Henny Youngman was "take my wife, please." Jackie Gleason was a big drinker, but I don't remember that being part of his act. WC Fields? Didn't he have the red, bulbous nose of a drunk? There was another comic from that era, who was a physical comic and not so much about drinking. Buster Keaton, I think. I'll go with Gleason or Fields.

PBS had a six part special on the history of comedy called "Make Me Laugh" a few months ago. I think it's re-running now. Not too funny, but interesting.

I don't remember anything about Jackie Gleason's humor being based on drinking. I think I recall WC Fields having a drink in his hand and making jokes about it, though. So I'll go with WC Fields.

There you go. It was, in fact, W. C. Fields. Other classic lines of his: "Hey! Who took the cork out of my lunch?" and "I always keep some spirits handy in case I encounter a reptile...which I also keep handy."

OK, let's see if this one's a bit easier. #3: Why do I need to get married again? Why don't I just find a woman I can't get along with and give her a house?

Well, no, but I'm delighted someone was willing to take a try. For a day or so there, I was afraid everyone had gotten scared off, or maybe all your servers had been paralyzed by the denial-of-service attacks rumored to be by North Korea.

I'm surprised this one turned out to be hard. He was fairly recent and very well-known. This one WILL produce some "Oh,duh" moments.
