A rather astounding book was published in 1964, with an re-edited issue in 1966 by the Science Editor for the New York Times. He was Walter Sullivan, the name of this book, the sixth one, was entitled 'We Are Not Alone" One of the many reviewers, Robert C. Cowan of the Christian Science Monitor said of it :" A mind-stretching book, a challenge to earth-centered thinking...the book is a magnificent reporting job." It still holds up today.
Walter Sullivan also wrote: "The Search For Intelligent Life On Other Worlds" in dealing with this topic. It is worth it to have it as not only an excellent reference on this topic, but also as a reminder of just how a really good reporter and editor needs to be on this very volatile subject.

Well, in what sense do you mean "contact". Conversation? Nil. Communications being limited by the speed of light, and having not yet received any hint of a signal (not even an intentional signal, our Radio and TV signals emanate from this planet) of other life yet from our searches. The Drake equations about the probability of intelligent life in the universe, not our ability to communicate with them. If you believe in evolution then I think it's hard to NOT think other planets also have intelligence. If by "contact" you mean finding some evidence of this life, then it's possible it could happen within the next 100 years, but I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't. There's so much sky to search for a signal, and so much noise to distinguish it from that it has to be relatively close and strong. So like many unanswered questions in science, who knows *shrugs*?

Isn't it possible that sufficiently advanced aliens would look at our concerns and just laugh (or the equivalent thereof)? When I watch a do try to puzzle out something that works on a human level of understanding and fail, I wonder if we might be in a similar situation with intelligent aliens. They would look at us and say "Yes, we thought that way when we were a young species; we are wiser now and our former behavior, exhibited by these humans, looks moronic."
