I grew up in an Army family, moved around a bunch, lived overseas for five years through coups, revolutions, and other turmoil, which drove my initial interest in politics, diplomacy, history, economics. My family was musical; I love classical music, jazz, reggae, blues,... I've spent my career in scientific and technical computing -- which has given me access to interesting things to learn about in a variety of disciplines. I'm a Scout leader (and an Eagle Scout) so love the outdoors. Faith keeps me sane.

Don't ever be "bored"!!

Boredom is the emotion right before I do something about it: plan a trip, charter a sail boat, go scuba diving, shoot some pictures, cook something new, find a concert, learn a new dance step, play out a slam in bridge, hike, camp, or run an orienteering trail at Bastrop State Park.
I love change. I’ve spent most of my career as an entrepreneur in high-tech.
Divorced, it’s time for some new friends. I treasure the friends I have, but many of the best ones are in other places. (Road trip!) I grew up in an Army family. This stay in Austin (1999-to date) is the longest I’ve lived anywhere, and my fourth “tour” in Texas. I lived in Greece for three years, and Thailand for two, spending quality time in Boston, New York, Washington, Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco, as well as small towns in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, on my way here.
Travel is part of the adventure: the UK, Sweden, Italy, Curacao, and Bonaire most recently. I love ethnic restaurants. I enjoy cooking, mostly Thai, Northern Italian, or Interior Mexican. I enjoy sports where the action-never-stops, like basketball and soccer. I have some loyalties to teams from my past: Kansas, Celtics, and Spurs basketball; Red Sox baseball, but I’m broad-minded, adaptable, and will happily quaff a beer and root for your favorite team (unless they’re playing someone above!)
Music is a godsend: I got to spend a lot of time in Symphony Hall and Orchestra Hall in college and grad school. There is no place finer in the world than a good jazz club when someone inspired is playing. I also enjoy blues, Cajun, folk, and reggae; rock too if it engages head and/or heart. It’d be fun to find someone who liked ballroom or Latin dancing – I’ve enjoyed the lessons I’ve taken.
Faith is important to me: I’ve been Lutheran most of my life, but am close to Episcopalians, Catholics, and born-agains. Sharing a faith journey is important to me. Besides faith, I care about my health. I work out several times a week and watch what I eat. I have grown-up responsibilities: my son is ten and with me every other week. We’re both very involved in Scouting.
To net it out, I’m looking for quality people and quality friends. Long-term, I’m “treasure hunting” for a deeply intelligent, communicative, gentle, self aware, genuine, and Christian friend and partner, someone creative, possibly musical, who enjoys the outdoors and working out. I’d like to start out with light and fun, getting to know each other while we sail, dive, explore new restaurants, see some good movies, hike, bike, catch almost any game at U.T., or catch some music wherever there is music in town! Beyond that, if you’d like to try a new recipe, drink some wine, and stay in on a rainy night, that’s fun too, as part of building a relationship.
That’s me for now, what about you? Send me a message; I’d enjoy hearing from you.

My parents were both English lit majors; I have the family "print addiction". I read *mostly* non-fiction. I love David Kahn's The Codebreakers, George Will's Men at Work: The Craft of Baseball, the Richard Rhodes books on the atomic bomb program and proliferation, David McCullough's biographies/histories, Bill Bryson's travelogues, most of William Least-Heat Moon's books (especially Prairie Earth and Blue Highways), and William Langer's diplomatic histories of Europe, which are forty plus years old now. In fiction, I love Graham Greene and John LeCarre, though Steinbeck's Doc Ricketts is my personal hero.
