I was born and grew up in northern England, with Irish ancestry. I did my BA at Warwick, MA at Manchester, then spent 5 years teaching English in Germany. Returned to do a PhD (German social thought) and am now working as a teacher in Oman (will return when the time is right). I had both working class and middle class influences in my uprbinging, and I have tried to take some of the best of both, with an orientation to life that is both ethereal and earthy. I strongly value education and enjoy dwelling upon and within the abstract, but equally content with a pint of real ale at the local pub talking mundanities with random punters. My catholic upbrining gave me a strong commitment to social justice, and I am socially and politically engaged, but I can't describe my politics as either left or right: I'm non-partisan, and issues-oriented. I have travelled relatively widely, to about 40 countries, including China, Palestine, Syria, and most of Western and Eastern Europe - though not yet to Africa, which I hope to rectify soon. I'm fond of the outdoors, and like to keep myself fit. I enjoy walking and cycling: the more adventurous the terrain the better.
