Recent debate with, "Faust" below:

Faust wrote:

Maths are an invention of man, not a cosmic force. 1+1 is 2 because someone
thousands of years ago decided so, not because God imprinted His secrets in
numbers. There's no calculus floating around the universe, hiding the Final
Truth. In fact, you can trace the history of numbers and operations. The zero,
for example, is a creation of arabs.

Really? Really??

How about the Pythagorean theorem, which does not depend on numbers at all?
It defines the relationship of sides in any right triangle, anywhere in the
universe. Say, the triangle formed by the Sun, the Earth, and Sirius on some
particular day. Doesn't matter how you measure things (so long as you're
consistent and accurate), or what notation you use: the Pythagorean theorem holds
true. The relationship is what it is, with man or without.

How about Pi, the ratio of a circle's diameter to it's circumference? Nobody
invented that, yet there it is. An immutable and unchangeable mathematical
truth which doesn't need anybody's notation to be immutable and unchangeable.
You can't make Pi be what you want, even by legislation (although Indiana
once tried). That ratio was not invented, it was discovered! That ratio will
stand true long after the Earth and everything on it is reduced to it's
constituent atoms.

How about the Fibonacci series, which precisely describes the spirals we see
in sunflowers, hurricanes, and galaxies? Do you think mankind somehow
invented this particularly beautiful bit of mathematics? Or did we discover a
wondrous truth about the very nature of existence?

Do you think electricity would dry your clothing if imaginary numbers were
an "invention" of man, divorced from physical reality? Do you think your nifty
computer would work if the stunningly complex mathematical principles on
which it was build it did not in some deep way mirror the behavior of
fundamental particles of the universe?

Really? You haven't a clue about mathematics or science. Such drooling
idiocy demonstrates a willing ignorance. Go back to your bible, or better yet, go
to school. While the bible is a lot easier, you might find education more
useful.

"Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe."
-- Galileo Galilei

I disagree with Galileo only to the extent that he invoked a deity (though,
admittedly, he did so pretty much at sword point with the Church).
