Picturing an adventurous partner

I've reached mid-life and am in the process of looking backward and forward; re-evaluating what's most important. I still love my profession, but after 28 years of government work I've taken a leap and started my own business. My work has taken me to wildlife refuges, parks, and forests and I look forward to seeing more of these places as I continue my work in environmental and cultural resource interpretation.

I love nature photography, hiking, camping (usually by car/RV these days, but would still enjoy traveling by canoe or raft, on horseback or leading a llama). I LOVE to travel, but I'm not good at traveling light. I'm used to traveling alone, but would enjoy many things more if they were shared. I have a higher energy level than most of my friends, but need to work harder at staying in shape so I can do the things I love for many more years. (I can still portage a canoe but those things sure have gotten heavy!) I don't ever want to stop exploring interesting places, experiencing new things, and meeting new people.

I truly enjoy doing things with kids--sharing nature with them, getting them involved in creative projects. My two aging dogs (border collie/Australian shepherds) are lovable companions. Like me, they're getting older and slower but still always ready to go for a walk.

I am easy to talk to--I'm told I make people feel welcome and comfortable. I'm easy-going but responsible. I'm adventurous, independent, and comfortable alone, but would really like to find a kindred spirit to share life's journey--after all, the journey's what it's all about, isn't it?

You're mature but young at heart. You're secure, have passions that give direction your life, but are open to new things. You're a true PARTNER--responsible, emotionally stable, supportive, loving, HONEST, a good communicator. You'll treat me with respect and I'll reciprocate.

You enjoy traveling and exploring the world--particularly natural areas. You appreciate beauty (man-made or natural) in the world around you. You're excited about sharing your favorite places and activities with me, but also interested in sharing mine--or exploring new places and trying new things together.

You're easy to be around and you like interesting, intelligent people. You enjoy being "alone" together, spending time with family and friends, or meeting new people--yet you're comfortable spending time alone or pursuing separate interests. You're as curious about the world as I am

If you have children or grandchildren, I look forward to getting to know them. I don't have children but I have a large, active family (my Mom, 5 siblings and 9 nieces and nephews--are scattered from Alabama to California). They're all important to me.

You're NOT politically conservative or a religious zealot. You ARE open-minded, accepting of diversity, and have your own sense of spirituality. You're confident in your beliefs, but not so confident that you've stopped questioning them. You aren't afraid to stand up for underdogs, challenge those who abuse others, or question authority. You're kind and respect others, regardless of their position in life. You're probably a Democrat.

You're financially responsible and secure, but you don't measure people by the amount of money they make. You DON'T feel it's necessary to include pictures of your car/motorcycle in your profile.

At home, you enjoy reading, working on the house or yard, snuggling on the couch in front of a fire watching a good movie. You enjoy music and the arts, animals and the outdoors. It's OK if you enjoy sports, but you aren't addicted to them--and you're tolerant of my lack of interest in all but the Olympics.

You take pride in your appearance, but KNOW appearance is only skin deep! You're comfortable in jeans but dress up occasionally. You like to dance (or wouldn't mind learning).

If we're not perfect partners, but we might be friends, that's OK. One can never have too many friends!

That's a tough question. I read a little bit of a lot of people and generally don't think in term of "favorites" (whether we're talking people, colors, places, movies, or books...) Off the top of my head Mark Twain, Edward Abbey, Jon Krakauer, John McPhee come to mind. I have greatly enjoyed 3 books by Molly Gloss, a Northwest writer whose novels feature non-traditional Washington and Oregon women in the late 1800s-early 1900s.

What would you be doing with your life now if money was not a factor?

Casual conversation over a glass of wine--outdoors if the weather's nice. No pressure, just getting to know each other.

Balderdash or similar games, though I don't play games often.

I like most kinds of music except things like heavy metal and rap. I guess folk might be my favorite.

Exploring and photographing natural areas and cultural sites wherever I live, work or travel combines my creative, recreational, professional and intellectual interests. I took an early retirement from federal government work to start my own business 2.5 years ago. Since then, I've been in the process of reinventing myself, learning how to be an entrepreneur after 28 years of working for federal and state natural resource agencies.
